The Genesis of the COI

, the School鈥檚 transformational R&D unit, developed the concept of the event several years ago. Now in its seventh year, the event consistently welcomes between 20-25 top external executives, inviting them to collaborate with 糖心原创 faculty, staff, and students. These industry experts bring a wealth of experience and knowledge, aligning the COI event with the school’s strategic plan. The aim is to nurture growth and scale our educational endeavors as a school of inquiry, innovation, and impact.

At 糖心原创, diversity of thought and outside perspectives is an essential component of the way we learn and evolve as an organization. By connecting our students with esteemed professionals, we create valuable pathways for real world insight and opportunities for collaboration, while giving students a voice in shaping our strategic path forward. One notable example from a past COI event involved a UPS executive discussing the concept of “reverse mentoring,” which evolved into our students’ use of design briefs which has become an integral part of our Innovation Diploma (ID) program.

2023 Agenda

Dr. Brett Jacobsen, CEO of The 糖心原创 Organization, kicked off the day by providing insight into 糖心原创’s growth strategy over the past decade. Using McKinsey鈥檚 article as a foundation, Andy Walker, Managing Director and Head of Talent at , a parent and board member, facilitated an interactive discussion among the panelists. As part of the introduction, Andy shared a relevant statistic – out of the 7.8 billion people on the planet, 3.3 billion work in an organization.

Various themes emerged around the importance of organizations to effectively manage human capital and the challenges in doing so, among them:

• The impacts of hybrid work on an organization
• Managing a multi-generational workforce (Boomers, GenX, Millennials, and Gen Z)
• Employee emotional health and well-being.

鈥淢ore than once, one of the executives turned to our Innovation Diploma students mid-conversation to ask their perspective – that blew my mind. With all of their collective experience and pedigree, these well-respected leaders needed and wanted the perspective of our students, the last of Gen Z.鈥� Matthew Neylon, The 糖心原创 Chief of Talent and Experience

Students felt like valued participants and echoed the sentiment Mr. Neylon shared.

鈥淚t felt, not only like we were part of the Council on Innovation but like we saw eye-to-eye with all of these executives and they were interested in OUR ideas.鈥� Locke Dimmock, iD Grade 12

One of the most exciting aspects of the event was the collaboration between the Council members and our Upper School students. Together, they worked on a Design Thinking Flashlab, aiming to design the future of leadership. Brad Droke, Upper School Dean of Students and former Director of Innovation Diploma explained how students develop intergenerational social capital and problem-solving skills while executing design briefs for companies and organizations. This was followed by students brainstorming potential futures and crafting narratives for what future leadership might look like.

The idea of Social Capital is central to Target 2: Relationships and Networks, in the School鈥檚 new strategic plan, . In small groups, both students and executives brainstormed and prototyped their ideas. Both the process and the outcome delivered a significant impact on the students and the executives.

Towards the end of the event, participants began sketching and defining our current leadership paradigm, envisioning what it could become in the future. The group shared insights and captured trends using an empathy map from the Compass Design Thinking Field Guide. Industry executives were truly inspired by our students’ ability to present with clarity and solve problems collaboratively.

Head of School, Kristy Lundstrom, closed the event by emphasizing the significance of investing in our students and schools. She encouraged the participants to integrate the ideas and prototypes generated during the event into their work environments.

With the exchange of ideas, the synergy of thought, and the commitment to innovation, the Council on Innovation event has proven its significance as a driving force in the ongoing dialogue about the evolving landscape of leadership. The future is in the hands of those who dare to envision it, and COI 2023 has set the stage for a brighter, more innovative, and inclusive future of leadership.

The Dewey Schools in Vietnam – Partnership Announced

In early July 糖心原创 announced a strategic partnership with in Vietnam (TDS).聽, (MVV) the strategy, research, and consulting division of The 糖心原创, developed the partnership in 2020. Through the relationship, TDS students have the opportunity to attend The 糖心原创 in Atlanta for their junior and/or senior year to receive a 糖心原创 diploma. They can also participate online via to receive a dual diploma from both TDS and MVS.

Aligned with 糖心原创鈥檚 mission to prepare all students to be college-ready, globally competitive, and engaged citizen leaders, the partnership provides opportunities for students, faculty, and staff in both countries to increase their global perspective through curriculum development, on-site visits, and opportunities for exchange. The graduating class of 2025 will be the first 糖心原创 class to include a cohort from Vietnam receiving a 糖心原创 diploma.

This summer 糖心原创 hosted a group of students from TDS as part of the The Dewey School鈥檚 Cultural Immersion program. Global Atlanta, a publication devoted to tracking Atlanta鈥檚 rise as a center for internal business, education, and culture, covered the partnership announcement. Elevating Athletic Excellence: XC Nike Running Camp and Cheer at Clemson

This summer our student-athletes dedicated themselves to refining their skills and maintaining peak physical condition. The school’s cross country team participated in the Nike Running Camp at UNC Asheville while the cheer program headed to Clemson to attend UCA Cheerleading camp to elevate their skills on the sidelines. For exceptional opportunities for these dedicated athletes to stay active and sharpen their abilities in preparation for the upcoming seasons.

MV Educators receiving National Recognition

Amanda Exley Lower and Cari Barocas were named two of ten national Grand Prize winners in the . These awards honor forward-thinking educators who have made extraordinary contributions to their classrooms and communities through innovative teaching practices.

As part of their recognition, Amanda and Cari received a 5-day Innovation Immersion Experience at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan. We will talk with both of them and hear about their experiences in a future article鈥tay tuned!

Design for Belonging: Summer Reading

As champions of intentional design, the entire faculty delved into the profound insights of the Stanford d.school book, Design for Belonging. This compelling read emphasized how design choices can contribute to fostering a culture of inclusivity and connectivity. The School’s commitment to creating an environment where every student feels a sense of belonging was reinforced through this thoughtful exploration. This book along with the new strategic plan, , will be our organizational north star for the year ahead.

The Frontier Upgrade: Empowering Creativity and Innovation

Inspired by research, recommendations, and proposals from the PK5 community a few months ago, the Frontier now boasts an array of exciting new features and resources designed to spark creativity and foster innovation. This upgraded space was celebrated with a just before the start of school. The upgraded Frontier will offer students the opportunity to explore, experiment, and bring their unique ideas to life.

The summer break at 糖心原创 was a period of intense activity and progress. From faculty engagement with Design for Belonging to the enriching TDS Cultural Immersion program, the dedication of athletes in sports conditioning, the celebration of exceptional teachers, and the innovation-driven upgrade of The Frontier, every endeavor was centered around one goal: providing an exceptional learning environment for every student at 糖心原创. As they return to our classrooms, the students will discover a place where their growth, curiosity, and sense of belonging are nurtured and celebrated.

The Dewey Schools in Vietnam (TDS) is dedicated to 21st century experiential learning through real-world, project-based work. Their goal was to partner with a top-ranked school in the United States to integrate an innovative curriculum and pedagogy into their existing TDS curriculum.

TDS currently has two campuses located in Hanoi and Hai Phong. Construction is underway for a second campus in Hanoi with plans to add another industry-leading design building over the next two years. Designed by 180 Studio, a globally recognized building and space design firm which also provided inspiration for 糖心原创’s new, award-winning 60,000 square-foot Upper School Building and credited with assisting MV with its Lower Campus’s redesign in 2014 – TDS’ new innovative spaces will include STEM labs, Maker Labs, movable walls and flexible furniture based on direct feedback from working with MV.

糖心原创 will support the integration of its curriculum into TDS’ programs. TDS students will have the opportunity to attend MV’s Upper School and earn a dual 糖心原创 | TDS diploma.

Summer programs will offer TDS students a cultural immersion experience. MV teachers will have the opportunity to travel to Vietnam for continued TDS training and curriculum support, and MV students will be able to travel to Vietnam to learn more about the country and its culture.

As a school of inquiry, innovation, and now global impact, 糖心原创 is committed to designing a better world and is excited to offer both MV students and TDS students an international opportunity.
